Research on health in Delhi

New Delhi: In today’s fast-paced life, people often ignore their health. But a recent important study has shown that you do not need to completely change your lifestyle to stay healthy. According to this research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, getting a little more sleep every day, getting some physical activity and including some extra vegetables in the diet can significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

basis of research

The study was conducted over eight years on more than 53,000 adults from the UK Biobank. The researchers found that even minor improvements in three habits could yield significant benefits. According to the study, if you sleep just 11 minutes more each night, get 4.5 minutes of moderate-vigorous physical activity a day and add a quarter cup of extra vegetables to your diet, your risk of heart disease could be reduced by 10 percent.

risk reduction

Risk may be reduced by 57%

According to the European Society of Cardiology, the benefits were even better for people who were able to make larger changes. The study found that the ‘optimal combination’, which included 8 to 9 hours of sleep per night, more than 42 minutes of exercise per day and a balanced diet, reduced the risk of serious heart diseases by 57 per cent compared with those who had the worst lifestyle.

Wonders of smartwatch and data

Researchers took the help of state-of-the-art technologies for this study. Data from wearable devices such as smartwatches were used to analyze participants’ sleep and exercise levels, while eating habits were reported by the participants themselves. Over this eight-year period, researchers recorded a total of 2,034 cases of major heart diseases.

Experts’ opinion: small steps are sustainable

Dr. Nicholas Komel, a researcher at the University of Sydney and the lead author of this study, said that small changes in various areas of daily life have a positive effect on heart health. Making such gradual lifestyle improvements is more feasible and sustainable for most people than making any one big change, he said.

Emily McGrath of the British Heart Foundation also supported that people do not need to turn their lives around overnight; Small changes in sleep, movement, and diet can make real improvements in heart health.
