Do men fall in love before women? New research findings

Do men fall in love before women?

Have you ever wondered why women fall in love sooner and are more emotional? This belief is quite prevalent in the society. But recent scientific research challenges this idea. Two new studies show that men often fall in love before women.

A study conducted by the Australian National University (ANU) in 2025, published in the journal Biology of Sex Differences, studied 808 young people aged 18 to 25. The results of this research were surprising – men fall in love on average about a month earlier than women. This means that if men experience love in about a month after the beginning of a relationship, women take a little longer.

The study also found that women felt love more deeply and thought more about their partners. Men fall in love less often, but when they do, they tend to commit quickly. Researchers believe this difference may be related to our evolution. Men had to show early commitment to attract a partner, while women were more careful in partner selection. So if a man says ‘I love you’ first, don’t mistake it for pretense – it could be his natural instinct.

The second study was published in the journal Psychological Science in 2024. In this, various stages of relationships were tracked in real time. The results show that women feel more deeply in love than men at the time of engagement. However, women’s emotions may wane a bit in the first two years of marriage, as responsibilities and everyday life increase. At the same time, men’s love gradually becomes stable and deeper.

This does not mean that women love less after marriage. Rather, the nature of love changes – the initial excitement is followed by stability. These studies show that no one gender is better or weaker than the other in love. It’s just that both are experienced differently. Men fall in love faster, while women feel more deeply.
