Health effects of lack of sleep and ways to improve it

Importance of sleep and effects on health

Due to today’s busy lifestyle, people are not able to get enough sleep, due to which they have to face many health problems. Experts believe that good sleep is essential for physical and mental health. While we sleep, our brain organizes information from the day and repairs the body. But if sleep is not complete, many problems can arise.

Side Effects of Sleep Deprivation

The most serious impact of lack of sleep is on heart health. When one doesn’t get enough sleep, blood pressure becomes abnormal, the stress hormone cortisol increases, and the risk of inflammation and blockage in the arteries increases. People who sleep less than 5 to 6 hours per day have manifold increased risk of heart attack, stroke and other heart diseases. Experts say that not getting 7-8 hours of sleep can increase heart related problems.

Other effects of lack of sleep

Sleep is also closely related to metabolism. Due to less sleep, the balance of insulin hormone in the body gets disturbed, due to which the blood sugar level becomes abnormal and the risk of type-2 diabetes increases. Apart from this, the hormones that control appetite are also affected, which increases the desire for unnecessary food and obesity increases rapidly.

Lack of sleep affects not only physical health but also mental health. This reduces irritability, anger and control of emotions. Many people experience ‘brain fog’, in which it becomes difficult to concentrate and remember. Prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to serious mental problems like anxiety and depression.

Ways to improve sleep pattern

Lack of sleep can also weaken the immune system, which increases the risk of diseases. Apart from this, one feels tired and lack of energy throughout the day. To improve your sleep pattern, first get into the habit of sleeping and waking up at a fixed time.

Stop using mobile, laptop or TV at least an hour before sleeping, this will improve your sleep. Avoid tea, coffee or caffeinated beverages at night and keep your room cool and clean, so you can get good sleep. If changes are not made in your lifestyle soon, problems may increase.
