Second season of ‘Masla Legal Hai’ on Netflix: A new story

blindfold of the goddess of justice

The characters who hang out in the Sessions Court of Patparganj are always on alert, especially when cases get entangled in ‘jugaad’ and court debates. The first season of ‘Maamla Legal Hai’ in 2024 became popular among the audience due to its simplicity and grassroots comedy. Now, its second season is also available on Netflix.

New atmosphere of Patparganj

This time, the atmosphere of Patparganj seems to have changed. The old faces and memories remain the same, but their status and power have changed significantly. The first season featured a mix of lawyers’ courtroom shenanigans, while the second season delved deeper into the dilemmas facing high chairs of the judiciary. It would be worth seeing whether the old magic of Patparganj is still intact or its comedy has been lost somewhere amidst the legal complications.

Story: From Lawyers to Judge

The story of season 2 picks up where the first season left off, but with one significant change.

Our beloved lawyer Visheshwar Dayal alias Tyagi ji (Ravi Kishan) has now become the ‘District Judge’ of Patparganj. Now the story plays more in the judge’s chamber than in the courtroom debates. After becoming a judge, Tyagi ji is seen walking on this thin line of eating samosas with old friends and delivering impartial justice. At the same time, the old battle to capture the chamber continues between Sujata Didi (Nidhi Bisht) and Lakhmir Mintu (Anjum Batra). Ananya (Naila Grewal), who has returned from Harvard, is still struggling with the realities of Indian courts.

Acting: Ravi Kishan’s influence

The entire series once again depends on the shoulders of Ravi Kishan. As a judge, his body language and composed style impresses the audience. Nidhi Bisht and Anjum Batra’s banter adds spice to the comedy. Kusha Kapila has entered as lawyer Naina Arora, and her style is impeccable, although her character could have been given more depth. The mysterious presence of Divyendu Bhattacharya and the cameo of ‘Nirahua’ (Dinesh Lal Yadav) is a surprise package for the audience.

Weak Links: Lack of legal edge

Some things in Season 2 do not seem as tight as the first season. This time the writers have tried to raise serious issues like harassment against men, homosexual relationships and property rights, but these did not connect smoothly with the main story. The show is a bit lax in terms of editing. Some scenes have been stretched excessively, due to which the edge of comedy becomes blunt. The old ‘street smart’ lawyer comedy has toned down a bit due to the seriousness of the judge’s chambers.

Technical aspects and direction

Director Rahul Pandey has shown the dusty and file-filled world of Patparganj Court very well. The cinematography is simple, making the courtroom atmosphere real. The background score matches the mood of the story, but the editing could have been more ‘crisp’.

Conclusion: Should I watch or not?

‘Masla Legal Hai’ Season 2 is an honest sequel, which brilliantly depicts the dilemmas faced by the higher echelons of the judiciary. Although it lacks the ‘pure comedy’ of the first season, Ravi Kishan’s brilliant acting and your attachment to the characters of Patparganj will force you to watch it till the end.
