Dance: An Old Language
New Delhi: Dance is an ancient language of humanity, which expresses emotions without words. When the tune of music is heard, people automatically start dancing, whether it is a street corner or a big stage. There are many styles of dance around the world, but there are some that attract people of all age groups. In India, dance is considered a form of spiritual practice and worship. Let us know the importance of today.
Importance of World Dance Day
World Dance Day is celebrated every year on 29 April, because on this day in 1727, the famous French dancer and choreographer Jean-Georges Navarre was born. He is considered the father of the modern form of ballet dance. In 1760, he wrote a book titled ‘Letters on the Dance’, which discussed the nuances and improvements of the dance in depth. After this, through books like ‘Let’s Meet the Ballet’ he gave a new direction to ballet. With his contribution, ballet became a medium of storytelling and not just performance.
Energy of hip hop and break dance
Hip hop dance emerged on the streets of America in the 1970s. It is a street dance based on hip hop music, which reflects the energy and rebellion of youth. It involves break dancing or B-boying, which consists of elements such as toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes. Michael Jackson popularized it globally. This dance requires gymnastics, strength, balance and technique. Today’s youth consider it a symbol of freedom and creativity.
The magic of tap dance and belly dance
In tap dance, the sound emanating from the metal plates of the dancer’s shoes becomes music itself. It originated from the African-American community and developed in the 18th century. It combines American, British and Irish styles. At the same time, belly dance is also called West Asian or Arab dance, in which there is beautiful use of the whole body, especially the hips. Celebrities like Shakira have given it global recognition. Both styles leave the audience spellbound.
Gangnam Style, Salsa and Capuera
In 2012, South Korean rapper PSY’s Gangnam Style video became a hit on YouTube. The dance satirizes the Gangnam area and helped spread K-pop globally. Salsa, which originated from Cuba, is a pair dance that requires coordination with a partner. Brazilian Capuera is a unique blend of martial arts, acrobatics and African music. Its fast pace makes it extremely exciting.
Kathak, Waltz and other unique dances
The Indian classical dance Kathak brings the stories to life through facial expressions and postures. Here the face is more important than the body. The German waltz is considered the most romantic dance, changing tempo with the ups and downs of the music. Tinikling of the Philippines is performed on bamboos and Kabuki of Japan is performed in colorful costumes. Spain’s flamenco dance and other styles engage audiences while telling the story of their culture.
