Consumption of honey in summer: benefits and disadvantages

consumption of honey in summer

New Delhi: It is advisable to reduce the consumption of hot food items in summer, because in this season the external temperature is already high and bile starts increasing inside the body as well. In this condition, the body is affected by external and internal heat. Therefore, in summer, the demand for things with cool nature increases, while the demand for things with hot nature decreases. But an important question is whether consuming honey in summer can be harmful.

Honey is considered nectar in Ayurveda, but its nature is warming and moisturizing. The temperature and humidity in the atmosphere are already high in summer. In this situation, is it appropriate to consume honey in summer? According to Ayurveda, even though honey is hot in nature, it has also been called a ‘Yogavahi’ substance, that is, it absorbs the properties of the thing with which it is taken.

If honey is consumed directly, it can cause heat and irritation by increasing bile in the body. But if it is taken by mixing it with any other food item, its effect changes. For example, in summer, consuming honey mixed with water from an earthen pitcher in the morning can be beneficial. Mixing lemon in it and taking it on an empty stomach in the morning will cool the body and also keep the weight under control.

Consumption of Sattu is also common in summer. Some people like sweet Sattu and use sugar in it, but instead of sugar, honey can be used in Sattu. This mixture will provide both coolness and energy to the body. This will not only keep the body hydrated but will also remove muscle fatigue.

Honey can also be taken with curd in the afternoon. A mixture of honey and curd is a great probiotic food, which strengthens the digestive system and helps in protecting from heat stroke. One thing to note is that honey should never be taken with ghee. It comes under the category of Viruddha diet and consuming both together can create excess heat in the body, which can lead to imbalance of Vata and Pitta.
