Ways to get relief from heat: Wet cloth and other tips

people suffering from heat

The heat in Delhi and other states has troubled people a lot. The temperature has crossed 40 degrees Celsius in April. The effect of heat starts being felt from 8 am onwards. In such a situation, people resort to various measures to avoid heat.

Wet cloth and heat stroke

In summer you must have seen that people often keep a wet towel or scarf on their head. This gives them some relief, but is it helpful in protecting them from heat stroke or heat exhaustion? We discussed this topic with Dr. Pooja Pillai, Internal Medicine Consultant, Aster CMI Hospital.

According to the doctor, placing a wet cloth on the head can provide relief for some time, but it does not provide protection from heat stroke or heat exhaustion. When the body temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, it is called heat stroke. In such a situation, it is necessary to go to the hospital immediately.

proper use of wet cloth

If you have to go out for a while, a wet cloth can be useful. It protects you from direct sunlight and gives relief from the heat for some time.

Lightly wet the cloth and always choose clean cotton cloth. Keep it on the head for 10 minutes, but do not keep it for too long. Keeping wet clothes for a long time can increase the risk of infection. It is better to spend some time in the shade to avoid the heat.

Tips to escape the heat

  • Keep the body hydrated: Drink enough water in summer. ORS can also be made by mixing lemon, sugar and salt.
  • Avoid exposure to sunlight: Avoid going out between 12 noon to 4 pm.

  • Stay indoors: Try to stay indoors to avoid the heat.
  • Take breaks: People who are working in the sun should take breaks of 15-20 minutes every hour or two.
