Satyajit Ray: Inspirational story of the great hero of cinema

the power of dreams

Mumbai: Sometimes a dream is so big that every difficulty seems small in front of it. But when the same dream starts getting broken again and again, it is not easy to save it. The story of Satyajit Ray is also similar, who risked everything to make his first film. He could not find any buyer for two years, but did not give up. Ultimately, the same film made him one of the world’s greatest filmmakers.

money challenge

When Satyajit Ray decided to make his first film ‘Pather Panchali’, the biggest hurdle he faced was money. He would go to each producer with a special notebook containing sketches of scenes from the film so that people could understand his vision. But at that time no one found this story commercial. He received negative response from everywhere. Even after two years of continuous efforts, no financier was found.

Courage to pledge life insurance

When all avenues were closed, Satyajit Ray took a big step. He mortgaged his life insurance policy and also borrowed money from his friends and relatives. This decision was not easy, but for him it was not just a film but a dream which he wanted to fulfill at any cost.

A film that changed thinking

Satyajit Ray was born on 2 May 1921 in Kolkata. Since childhood, he was interested in music, painting and films. On the insistence of his mother, he went to Shantiniketan and studied arts there. After this he worked in an advertising company for about 13 years, where he deeply understood visual storytelling, which proved to be very helpful in his film career.

During a trip to London, he watched ‘Bicycle Thief’, which completely changed his way of thinking. He decided that he would make films that would reflect the truth of life. After this he bought the rights of ‘Pather Panchali’ and decided to convert it into a film.

Shooting of the film began on 27 October 1952. The first scene was shot on Sunday, in which the children run across the fields to see the train. But lack of money kept coming up again and again, due to which the shooting had to be stopped many times. The selection of the cast was also not easy; He advertised in the newspaper for the role of Apu and after a lot of hard work he found the right face.
