Symptoms of high blood pressure and effects on kidneys

Increasing cases of high blood pressure

Chandigarh, 17 May. In urban areas of the country, especially Delhi-NCR, cases of high blood pressure (High BP) are increasing rapidly due to poor lifestyle. Often people consider a slight increase in BP as normal and postpone the medicine or necessary tests. Office stress, unhealthy food from outside and lack of physical activity are making the youth increasingly ill. According to health experts, BP is directly related to heart and kidney, which people often ignore.

Effect of high BP on kidneys

Dr. Amit Prakash Singh, Internal Medicine specialist of CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, has thrown light on the causes of this disease. He says that due to high BP for a long time, the small veins of the kidneys become weak, which can reduce their efficiency. Kidneys work like a filter in our body, which filters out dirt and excess water from the blood and expels them through urine. When blood pressure remains consistently high, pressure on these delicate tubes increases and they begin to shrink.

progressive disease without symptoms

Dr. Nishchay B., Senior Consultant Nephrologist, NephroPlus. According to , high BP and kidney disease often progress without symptoms. Many people come to know when the kidney has become very weak. For this reason it is called ‘silent killer’ in medical science. Initially the patient feels normal, but dirt starts accumulating inside the body. When the disease becomes severe, symptoms such as swelling in the legs, early fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite and difficulty concentrating emerge.

increasing danger among youth

Dr. Anupam Roy, Additional Director, Department of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant, Dwarka-based Aakash Healthcare Multi-Speciality Hospital, has expressed concern over the increasing danger among the youth. He says that due to bad lifestyle and stress, the problem of high BP is increasing rapidly even at a young age. If a person already has diabetes, is overweight or has a family history of kidney disease, the risk increases manifold. Excess salt, junk food and smoking further increase this problem.

Ways to avoid dialysis

Doctors have clarified that the relationship between high BP and kidney is very deep and dangerous. Bad kidney disturbs the balance of salt and water in the body, due to which blood pressure increases further. This is a vicious cycle that eventually pushes the patient into dialysis or kidney transplant. To avoid this, it is most important that people take BP medicines regularly as recommended by the doctor. This fatal danger can be avoided by regular checkups, lack of salt in food, daily walking and drinking enough water.
