India reiterates resolve to end AIDS in UN

High-level meeting on HIV/AIDS

An important meeting on HIV/AIDS was held in the United Nations General Assembly on 22 and 23 June 2026. On this occasion, India reiterated its promise to eliminate AIDS as a public health problem by 2030.

India’s resolve

India’s Permanent Representative P. Harish said in the meeting that inequalities and lack of funding in developing countries could threaten the successes achieved. He described the current situation as a ‘critical juncture’.

He urged the international community to make full use of the flexible provisions available under the TRIPS Agreement of the World Trade Organization. Through these provisions, low-income and middle-income countries can purchase or produce affordable diagnostics, antiretroviral drugs and other essential medicines.

Emphasizing on equitable global access, P. Harish said that these legal exemptions are not just trade rules, but a lifeline for millions of people who depend on affordable treatment. India has long been a major supplier of affordable generic medicines.

India’s AIDS control program

India’s AIDS control program is based on a robust model, integrating public health planning, social protection and a rights-based approach. HIV services have been integrated with the general health system and primary health care, reaching more people.

P. Harish said that now these achievements will have to be further strengthened and accelerated so that the target of 2030 can be achieved. He also said that India is committed to completely control AIDS and is making continuous efforts in this direction.
