America’s 250th Birthday: Importance of Music and Culture
America’s 250th birthday
America recently completed its 250 years. I saw glimpses of the celebrations organized on this occasion on TV. A familiar tune was heard—“Don’t Stop Believin’.” This song refreshed my memories of the last fifty years. I also remembered the voice of Bruce Springsteen, who sang “Born to Run” and “Born in the U.S.A.” Like singing songs. It dawned on me that my journey to understand America goes much deeper through its songs.
Personal travel and journalism
I have been a witness to events in America for the last fifty years. When I reached JNU in Delhi from Bhilwara, my journey to know the world began. There was a period of emergency at that time, and the JNU library gave me an opportunity to write on global events. My first article was published on 16 December 1976, which was on an international topic.
Political and cultural background of America
America of 1975-76 was an important time for me. At that time, President Nixon remembers the Watergate scandal and helicopters taking off from the US Embassy in Saigon. 1976 celebrated America’s 200th anniversary, but it was also accompanied by the disappointment of losing the war.
Music and the American Dream
Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” became the voice of the restlessness of that generation. This song gives the message of getting out of small towns and creating your own future. After this, in 1981, Journey Band’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” came, which filled a new energy in America.
America’s dream and its identity
The American dream is not just about economic success, but it is a symbol of individual freedom and opportunity. America has given its citizens the opportunity to dream and make them come true. This is why people are attracted to America.
Importance of music and culture
America’s music reflects its soul. The national anthem as well as popular songs like “The Star Spangled Banner” shape America’s identity. These songs not only tell stories of struggle, but also give a message of faith and hope.
lessons for india
This dream of America is an inspiration for India. We need faith and freedom to make our dreams come true. It is important to understand that development does not come from speeches and policies alone, but from individual dreams.
