Increasing incidence of cancer and impact on health
impact of cancer
Cancer is a fatal disease, which affects not only the affected person but also his/her family financially, socially and emotionally. This serious disease is affecting millions of people around the world. In India, around 32 lakh people have been battling cancer for the last five years and are still alive. Every year 15 lakh new cases are reported. The World Health Organization (WHO) has presented shocking statistics regarding cancer.
cancer statistics
According to WHO, one in five people is likely to develop cancer. The disease will affect 92% of people, whether they are affected by the disease themselves or a close family member.
shocking report
Head of the World Health Organization’s Cancer Control Team, Dr. Andre Ilbawi said the stories that have been told about cancer over the years have been about scientific advances, new technologies, new treatments and new hope. However, this is not the whole story, as cancer cases continue to rise.
This year’s WHO Global Status Report states that every year 2.06 crore new cases of cancer are reported, out of which 1 crore people die. By 2050 this figure may increase to 3.5 crores. In rich countries, 85% of people affected by breast cancer or childhood cancer survive for at least 5 years, while in poor countries this figure is only 30%.
availability of medicines
Only 9% to 54% of the 20 essential cancer medicines are available in low- and lower-middle-income countries, while this figure ranges from 68% to 94% in rich countries. There are no radiation facilities in 23 countries. Sub-Saharan Africa has a very low rate of awareness about cancer, due to which it has the highest number of cancer deaths.
