Ways to keep your smartphone safe in the rain

Precautions for smartphone safety

New Delhi: Many smartphones nowadays are equipped with water-resistant technology, but this does not mean that they are completely safe from water. If excess water gets into the phone, it may stop working. If your phone gets wet in the rain, there is no need to worry. It can be kept safe by adopting the right measures. However, there are some mistakes you should avoid making.

1. Don’t worry if your phone gets wet

If your phone gets wet in the rain, first of all there is no need to panic. Switch off the phone immediately. Keeping a wet phone on can cause a short circuit inside, which can further damage the phone. After this, wipe the phone with a soft and dry cloth and let it dry naturally for some time. If you feel that there is moisture left inside the phone, you can wrap it in a packet and keep it in a rice box for a few hours.

2. Do not put a wet phone on charging

If your phone gets wet in the rain, do not make the mistake of putting it on charging immediately. Doing this may cause short circuit inside the phone. First make sure that the phone is completely dry, only then charge it.

3. Check the charging port

After the phone gets wet, check the charging port carefully. If water or moisture is visible on it, wipe it gently with a clean and dry cloth. Only when the port is completely dry, put the phone on charging. This will keep the phone safe and reduce the risk of damage.

4. Do not use hair dryer or strong sunlight

If your phone gets wet, do not use a hair dryer or strong sunlight to dry it quickly. Excessive heat can damage the internal parts and battery of the phone. This may damage the battery and in severe cases may even increase the risk of fire or battery explosion. Always let the phone dry on its own at room temperature.

What to do?

Many smartphones nowadays come with IP67 or IP68 water-resistant rating. But this does not mean that you can use the phone without hesitation in the rain. It is not advisable to make calls, type messages or watch videos during rain. Doing so may cause water to reach the screen, speaker or charging port and damage the phone. If you go out to office, college or field work every day, use a good waterproof pouch or sturdy cover for your phone. Also, to avoid any loss, keep a backup of your important photos, videos and documents in the cloud or laptop.
