New medical facilities against drug abuse started in Punjab

New step of Punjab government

The Punjab government has taken an important step to further strengthen the campaign against drug abuse. Six new methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) clinics have been set up in the state. Their objective is to provide better medical and rehabilitation facilities to drug addicts.

New medical facilities in six districts

In the first phase, methadone maintenance therapy clinics have been opened in Faridkot, Patiala, Ludhiana, Gurdaspur, Mohali and Jalandhar. In these centres, people suffering from drug addiction will get treatment under the supervision of expert doctors. Methadone therapy is useful for people who have been addicted to narcotics for a long time. The government believes that with proper treatment and regular monitoring, these individuals can return to normal life. Facilities like counselling, medicines and health check-up of patients will also be available in these clinics.

More clinics to come

The Punjab government has clarified that this campaign will not be limited to only six clinics. In the future, six more nationally accredited methadone maintenance therapy clinics will be opened. This will take the total number of such centers in the state to 12. The aim of the government is to provide treatment facilities to as many people as possible and give them the opportunity to get out of drug addiction. With the opening of new centres, people from different districts will not have to go far for treatment and will be able to get health services on time.

Government’s efforts towards drug free Punjab

The government is continuously giving the message that mere action against drug addiction is not enough, but treatment and rehabilitation is equally important. Under this thinking, the scope of therapy clinics is being expanded. Experts believe that timely treatment increases the chances of recovery of patients. The government says that the priority is to connect the people affected by the drug problem to the mainstream of the society. Along with expansion of treatment facilities, awareness programs will also be run in future.
