Answering a typical AI question requires about 0.3 watt-hours of energy. This amount is so small that it can be considered less than lighting an LED bulb for 5 minutes. In fact, this energy comes not from your home, but from huge data centers where AI models are working. Therefore, there is no need to worry about a sudden increase in your electricity bill by using AI.

The energy consumption of AI depends on the length and complexity of the question. If you get a detailed answer of about 7,500 words, it uses about 2.5 Wh of energy. At the same time, when processing a large research query of 75,000 words or a huge codebase, this consumption can increase to about 40 Wh. This is because AI requires more computing resources to understand large documents and generate answers, which also increases energy demand.


Comparison of mobile, TV and laptop

By comparison, asking about 65 to 70 common AI questions uses the same amount of energy as it takes to charge a smartphone with a 5000 mAh battery once. At the same time, a large 40 Wh AI query can consume approximately the same amount of energy as charging two smartphones. Watching TV for an hour uses about 90 Wh of electricity, which is equivalent to about 300 simple AI queries. This clearly shows that small everyday AI queries are not huge consumers from an energy perspective.

Experts suggest writing short and clear prompts when using AI to avoid unnecessary processing. Do not share banking information, passwords or other sensitive data on any AI platform. Use only trusted and official AI services. In the future, tech companies are focusing on developing more energy-efficient AI models and green data centers, thereby reducing the impact on the environment.
