CJI Chandrachud ‘prayed to God’ for solution when Ayodhya case was on

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, who was part of the Supreme Court Bench that delivered the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid verdict in 2019, has said he had prayed to God for a solution.

CJI Chandrachud was addressing residents of his native Kanhersar village in Khed taluka of Maharashtra on Sunday (October 20) when he made the remarks. He also asserted that God will find a way if one has faith.

“Very often we have cases (to adjudicate) but we don’t arrive at a solution. Something similar happened during the Ayodhya dispute, which was in front of me for three months. I sat before the deity and told him he needed to find a solution,” the CJI, who was felicitated at the village, said.

Asserting that he prays regularly, the CJI said, “Believe me, if you have faith, God will always find a way.”

The Ayodhya verdict

On November 9, 2019, a five-judge Supreme Court Bench headed by then CJI Ranjan Gogoi settled a fractious issue that went back more than a century by paving the way for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The idol of the temple was consecrated on January 22 this year in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Incidentally, the CJI visited the Ram temple in Ayodhya in July this year and offered prayers.

The Supreme Court Bench had also ruled that a mosque would come up on an alternative five-acre plot in Ayodhya.
