CJI emphasizes on the need for National Law Academy
Chief Justice (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday stressed the need to establish a National Law Academy in the country to deal with the new challenges arising from cyber crime and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The CJI said that we are entering an era where AI and technology are becoming powerful tools in strengthening the legal system, but the same technology is also bringing new forms of crimes.
He said that cases of drug smuggling and cyber crime are seriously threatening the citizens of the country. “We are the victims of cybercriminals’ crimes, and are we professionally capable of meeting this challenge?” He raised the question.
Importance of mediation and training
Justice Surya Kant said that a court should not just be a place of trial but also a dispute resolution centre. Emphasizing the importance of mediation, he said that mediation is proving to be a successful and cost-efficient resolution tool in commercial litigation, matrimonial disputes, motor accident claims and 138 check bounce cases.
The CJI said that at present there are only 39,000 trained mediators in the country, while there is a gap between demand and supply. The country requires about 2.5 lakh trained mediators for effective mediation at all levels. He said, “It is necessary to increase the number of arbitrators from the District Court to the Supreme Court. Arbitration is not a weakness of the law, but its highest development.”
Need for National Law Academy
CJI Surya Kant particularly emphasized that there is a need for a national level legal academy to train lawyers across the country to face the challenges posed by AI and cyber crime.
This will enable lawyers to deal with new technology and the changing nature of crimes. In the end, the CJI also said that some cases cannot be resolved through arbitration, hence the judicial system should always be ready for a fair trial.
