CJI DY Chandrachud said, “I have given bail to A to Z (from Arnab Goswami to Zubair), this is my philosophy; “Bail is the rule and jail is the exception, this principle should primarily be followed.” He also said that independence of judiciary does not always mean independence from the government, but some pressure groups are trying to give verdict in their favor by using electronic media to put pressure on the courts. In terms of independence of the judiciary, this also includes putting pressure on the courts.

The CJI said that our society has changed, especially with the advent of social media, interest groups and pressure groups are trying to put pressure on the courts to take decisions in their favor by using electronic media. If the judges do not do this then the judiciary is not independent, this is what I object to. He said that judges should have the freedom to decide what the law and the Constitution require them to do.

Chandrachud said that when I give a verdict against the government and cancel the electoral bonds, I am very independent, but if the verdict comes in favor of the government, then I am not independent. Judges should be given freedom to decide on cases.

In the programme, the CJI was asked about the delay in hearing the bail plea of ​​former JNU student Umar Khalid, who is jailed in the Delhi riots case. The CJI, in response, said that the merits and demerits of a case shown in the media can be quite different, adding that the media often shows certain specific aspects or circumstances. As the CJI said, “A judge uses his mind while hearing a case and decides on its merits without any bias.” A particular case becomes important in the media and then the court is criticized. Bail matters were of most importance to me.
