The Chief Minister said that the government closely examined the list of beneficiaries of ration cards (NFSA) and various welfare schemes, in which more than 10 lakh names were found which either did not exist or were availing the benefits illegally against the rules. Highlights of the Chief Minister’s statement: CM Sarma made it clear in a public address that this action is not only to stop corruption, but to secure the right of genuine citizens over the resources of the state. 10 lakh cards cancelled: Found during investigation That many people were taking ration on the basis of fake documents. These names have now been completely removed from the database. Savings: The removal of these fake names will save crores of rupees annually to the government exchequer, which will be utilized for the poor and needy. Infiltration and Demography: The Chief Minister said that suspicious changes in the population patterns have been observed in certain areas in the state, after which this strict action had become mandatory. A strict stance on illegal encroachments and evictions has also been taken. However, Himanta Biswa Sarma rejected these allegations and said that this action is completely based on ‘digital verification’ and Aadhaar-linking, which has nothing to do with religion.
