Coach Shin Tae-yong stars in Indonesian movie after national team exit
Following his departure as head coach of the Indonesia national football team, Shin Tae-yong has taken on a guest role in a comedy-horror film.
The South Korean coach was dismissed by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) on Jan. 6. Dutch football legend Patrick Kluivert has since replaced him, signing a two-year contract with an option to extend.
Shin remains in Indonesia while awaiting compensation of approximately US$4.5 million from PSSI. His sudden termination requires PSSI to pay the full remaining salary in his contract, which was originally set to expire in 2027.
During this free time, the 55-year-old coach made a guest appearance in “Ghost Soccer: Bola Mati”, a local comedy-horror film. Shin plays himself, giving instructions to a village football team in one scene.
Shin said he was drawn to the movie because it’s about football.
“I am still a football person and loved by Indonesian fans. Therefore, I feel it is important to respond to their support,” he told She was. “I hope this movie will inspire people to love football and support youth football development.”

Shin told She was that he has received offers from several teams but is yet to make a decision.
“There are many offers coming in, but I still have issues to resolve,” Shin said. “I haven’t agreed to any offers yet and want to take a break for a while.”
Shin was appointed as Indonesia head coach in 2020. During nearly five years of his stint, Indonesia passed the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, reached the semifinals of the 2024 U23 Asian Cup and entered the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup. These are all historic achievements for Indonesian football.
