Cold day and cold wave alert in 7 states

New Delhi, 3 January 2026: The harsh cold conditions in North India currently remain the same. Due to continuous snowfall and rain in the hilly areas, there is severe cold in the plains, due to which life has been affected. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a serious warning of extremely dense smog, cold wave and ‘cold day’ in many states of North India for the next 4-5 days.

According to the Meteorological Department, there will be heavy smog in the morning in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha for the next 4 to 5 days. Apart from this, the outbreak of cold wave will be seen in the states including Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and UP for the next one week.

Since the beginning of the new year, the cold has been chilling in the capital. There is a strong possibility of cold wave in UP from 6 to 9 January. There has been an increase in cold in the state since Saturday. In Bihar too, January 4 and 5 have been declared ‘cold days’, where traffic may be affected due to dense smog. The situation has become more serious due to snowfall in Himachal region. The temperature in Tabo Gagdi has been recorded at -6.8 degrees Celsius.

The snowfall has increased as ‘black ice’ (thin layer of snow) started accumulating on the roads in the upper areas of Kullu-Manali. Due to security reasons, the administration has closed Rohtang Pass for vehicular traffic and tourists have been stopped at Gulaba. According to meteorologist Sandeep Sharma, the weather will be mainly dry in Himachal till January 8, but there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall in the high mountains on January 6.
