Cold wave is intensifying in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. Sub-zero temperatures have made life difficult in the highlands of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. According to the latest update from the Meteorological Department, since the beginning of December, the weather in North India has been undergoing drastic changes. Chances of snowfall have increased in the hilly areas, while extreme cold and fog have started affecting the lifestyle in these areas. An active Western Disturbance over North India and several cyclones may cause further weather changes in the coming days.

One of the major reasons for the changing climate in North India is the persistently active Western Disturbance. An important Western Disturbance at a height of 3.1 to 4.5 km is present over North Punjab and its vicinity. As a result, cyclonic air is affecting the north-western part of Uttar Pradesh. Another Western Disturbance is moving northward into the upper atmosphere, bringing more rain and snow in the coming days. This effect is likely to cause rain and snowfall in higher parts of Uttarakhand.

Temperatures in Himachal Pradesh drop below 5 degrees Celsius

Himachal Pradesh currently has a dry and very cold climate. The minimum temperature has dropped below 5 degrees Celsius at many places. The Shimla Meteorological Center has predicted light rain and snowfall over upper parts of Chamba, Kangra and Kullu districts between December 5 and 7.

Temperatures below zero degrees in Leh

Kashmir valley is suffering from severe cold. In many places the mercury is below the freezing point. Srinagar recorded minus 4.0 degree Celsius and Pahalgam minus 4.8 degree Celsius. Leh recorded minus 9.0 degrees Celsius, Kargil 7.8 degrees Celsius and Nubra valley minus 7.6 degrees Celsius.
