Cold winds chill Delhi-NCR, dense fog will prevail till December 25; It may rain in Haryana

North India is in the grip of severe cold and dense fog these days. The sky is covered with a thick blanket of clouds, due to which the sun’s rays are not able to reach the earth. Cold winds are blowing, which are making people shiver. The Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that there will be an impact of western disturbance in the hilly areas for the next three-four days. Due to this, there will be cloudy sky in Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. On December 20 and 21, there may be light to moderate rain in these areas and snowfall in higher altitude areas, which will further increase the cold.

In the plains like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, there may be partly cloudy sky and there may be light drizzle at some places. Cold wave will prevail in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar and there will be dense fog. As soon as the fog clears up a little, strong cold winds will blow, due to which the temperature will drop further and people will feel the melting cold. Due to dense fog, visibility is becoming very low, due to which trains and flights are getting delayed or cancelled. At many places, trains are delayed by hours and flights at airports are also being affected.

Dense fog alert in which states?

The Meteorological Department has warned of dense to very dense fog in many states of North India. These include most parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. Some reports also mention some areas of Maharashtra, Odisha and West Bengal. Everyday life is being badly affected by this fog. Road, rail and air traffic is being affected. Not much relief is expected from the fog for the next three-four days.

Cold and foggy conditions in Delhi

The weather has become very bad in Delhi these days. Cold winds are blowing even during the day and severe cold is being felt in the entire city. According to IMD, from December 20 to 25, the minimum temperature can be between 7 to 9 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature can be between 16 to 23 degrees Celsius. There will be dense fog, which will reduce visibility. Melting will increase due to wind and cold will be felt more. There may also be light clouds in the next few days.

AQI in Delhi-NCR

Dense fog and pollution together are increasing the problems of people in Delhi-NCR. In many areas the fog is so dense that nothing can be seen even a few meters away. The Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 400 at many places, which falls in the ‘severe’ category. AQI is very bad in areas like Anand Vihar, Vivek Vihar, Ashok Vihar, Wazirpur. Same is the situation in Noida and Ghaziabad also. Pollution is getting trapped due to fog and low wind speed. This situation may persist for the next few days.

Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh

Red alert is issued for severe cold in Uttar Pradesh. There will be dense fog in many districts. Visibility will be very low in cities like Agra, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Meerut, Gorakhpur. Cold and fog will remain till 24th December. Cold wave is going on in most of the districts of Madhya Pradesh. Dense fog and cold are increasing in areas like Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Rewa. The melting cold is troubling people.

Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Jharkhand and Bihar

Cold is increasing in Rajasthan, minimum temperature may fall to 4 degrees. In places like Faridkot and Bathinda in Punjab, the temperature is around 5 degrees. There is a possibility of fog and light drizzle in Haryana also. Dense fog and cold will continue in areas like Ranchi and Dhanbad in Jharkhand. The situation is similar in Bihar also.

Rain and snowfall in Kashmir

There is an alert of rain and heavy snowfall in higher areas in Kashmir on 20-21 December. The temperature in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam is around freezing point. ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ is starting from December 21 in Jammu and Kashmir, which will continue for 40 days. This is the coldest time of winter. During this period, snowfall is highest and the temperature falls to minus 6 to 8 degrees. Rivers, drains and water sources freeze. This time there is a possibility of rain and snowfall as soon as it starts. People are advised to wear warm clothes, be careful while going out and check train-flight information before travelling. To protect yourself from cold, take care of hot tea-coffee and healthy eating habits.
