- CNAP will show real name on incoming calls
For the past several years India has relied on third party apps to send any unknown caller ID. From scam alerts to identifying a caller, many users rely on apps like Two Caller. But now a big challenge has come up from OK telecom network for this. India’s new Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) framework and new rules issued for SIMs say that the way caller identification is going to change completely. Now there is no need to use any unknown database to verify your identity. Because now users are going to be sent directly through the system of telecom companies.

CNAP network level
CNAP displays the caller’s registered name on the screen which was registered on the telecom KYC record at the time of SIM issuance. This information will be given directly through mobile network during incoming calling. Unlike the app-based caller ID system, CNAP does not rely on Internet connectivity, contact syncing, or user-generated labels. The name displayed on the screen reflects the identity recorded in the official telecom database. This makes it difficult to hide the identity of Yoga. The purpose behind this is that when the caller reaches the user, his identity has already been verified. (Photo Courtesy – Pinterest)
CNAP is already live in many places
According to a TelecomTalk report, CNAP is yet to be rolled out across the country. But telecom operators have already started activating and testing the feature in several regions. The country’s leading telephone company Jio is opening CNAP enabled services in West Bengal, Kerala, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh East and West, Rajasthan, Punjab, Assam, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha.

Besides, Bharti Airtel is testing CNAP in West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir. While Vodafone Idea is currently trying to strengthen the CNAP service in Maharashtra and it is likely to be rolled out in Tamil Nadu as well. BSNL has started efforts to launch this service in West Bengal. All telecom operators are verifying the accuracy, network performance and user experience of this service before rolling it out everywhere.
Why is the government supporting CNAP?
CNAP is being promoted amid growing concerns about phone-based fraud, impersonation scams and misuse of Indian mobile numbers. Regulators say many scams are caused by misinformation from callers. This causes loss to the users, but the real identity of the caller is not revealed. Messaging platforms like WhatsApp can be used even after throwing away the SIM card. Scammers take advantage of this. CNAP addresses identity at the call level, while SIM-binding removes operational limitations. As per SIM-binding rules, messaging apps will only work if the original SIM used during registration remains active on the device. If the SIM is removed or changed, the app will need to be re-verified. Web and desktop logins will also be checked periodically. Due to which the incidents of misuse of SIM will also reduce to a great extent.
