Cologne clinch draw after late fightback at Eintracht Frankfurt
Alessio Castro-Montes scored within a minute of coming on as Cologne fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 CologneGoals: 1-0 Burkardt 66′ (assist: Chaïbi), 2-0 Kalimuendo 69′, 2-1 Kamiński 70′, 2-2 Castro-Montes 83’ (assist: Bülter)
The stakes could hardly have been higher for Cologne as they travelled to Deutsche Bank Park with a new face in the dugout. Following a 3-3 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 27, Lukas Kwasniok was relieved of his duties with the Billy Goats hovering just two points above the relegation zone. René Wagner, previously Kwasniok’s assistant, stepped up to take interim charge of a side seeking to halt a worrying run of seven matches without victory.
In contrast, Albert Riera’s Eintracht Frankfurt were aiming to maintain their impressive home record, having won all three fixtures at Deutsche Bank Park under the Spaniard without conceding a goal.
Both sides created promising opportunities in a lively opening period. Köln nearly took a shock lead inside the first minute when Jakub Kamiński’s effort was parried by Michael Zetterer into the path of Ragnar Ache, but the Frankfurt keeper recovered brilliantly to deny the follow-up. The hosts gradually established control, with Arnaud Kalimuendo proving a constant menace down the left flank. His best chance came in the 34th minute after being played through by Oscar Höjlund, but Marvin Schwäbe stood firm to ensure the teams went into the break deadlocked.
The decisive action arrived midway through the second period following a double substitution from Riera that saw Farès Chaïbi enter the fray. The change proved inspired as Chaïbi made an immediate impact, bursting past Cenk Özkacar to reach the byline before cutting back perfectly for Jonathan Michael Burkardt to tap home from six yards in the 66th minute.
The hosts doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab failed to control a ball in the area, only for Kalimuendo to hammer a stunning first-time finish into the net from 12 metres out. At 2-0 up, Frankfurt appeared to be cruising towards another home victory.
Wagner’s side had other ideas. Just a minute after falling two goals behind, Kamiński produced a moment of individual brilliance, slaloming past several Frankfurt defenders before stroking the ball past Zetterer with his left foot to halve the deficit. The goal transformed the match, with Cologne suddenly playing with renewed belief. The visitors continued to threaten, and Wagner rolled the dice with a quadruple substitution in the 82nd minute. The gamble paid off spectacularly as Alessio Daniel Castro-Montes, on for just 34 seconds, arrived at the back post to convert Marius Bülter’s cutback and level the scores at 2-2.
Frankfurt threw everything forward in search of a winner during seven minutes of added time. Younes Ebnoutalib headed over from a corner, while Arthur Nicolas Theate went close with the final chance of the match.
For Cologne, the point was celebrated like a victory, lifting them to six points clear of the relegation places. Frankfurt, meanwhile, remained seventh, missing an opportunity to close the gap on the European places. As the referee blew the final whistle, it was Wagner’s inspired substitutions that had rescued a valuable point for the Billy Goats in their fight for Bundesliga survival.
Man of the Match: Jakub Kamiński
On a day when Cologne desperately needed inspiration, Kamiński delivered a performance of the highest calibre. The Polish winger was a constant threat throughout, registering seven shots – more than any other player on the pitch. His goal was a moment of individual brilliance that sparked Cologne’s comeback, showing exceptional balance and composure to weave through the Frankfurt defence before applying a clinical finish.
Beyond his goal, Kamiński covered an impressive 11.7km – the most of any Cologne player – and was involved in numerous attacking moves that troubled the Frankfurt backline. His impact was recognised with the Man of the Match award, a deserved accolade for a performance that may prove crucial in Cologne’s battle against relegation.
