St. Pauli welcomed Cologne to the Millerntor-Stadion for a crucial clash in the Bundesliga relegation battle.

The hosts entered the match winless since late February, having collected just two points from their previous five league games. Cologne, meanwhile, arrived in Hamburg with momentum, unbeaten in four matches and fresh off a morale-boosting 3-1 victory over Werder Bremen in their last outing.

With just five points separating the sides before kick-off, both teams recognised the significance of the contest in their respective bids for survival.

Schwäbe denies wasteful hosts

The visitors made the brighter start with Jakub Kamiński and Saïd El Mala testing the St. Pauli defence in the opening exchanges. El Mala, Cologne’s top scorer, was particularly lively, firing over the bar after cutting inside from the left in the seventh minute.

The hosts gradually grew into the game, with Andréas Hountondji spurning a golden opportunity in the 10th minute when his close-range header was saved by Marvin Schwäbe.

St. Pauli continued to create the better chances as the half progressed, with Lars Ritzka stinging the palms of Schwäbe from a tight angle after an inviting cross from Jackson Irvine.

Mets breaks the deadlock

René Wagner introduced Linton Maina for Jan Thielmann at the interval, but it was St. Pauli who created the first opportunity of the second period when Hountondji’s effort was repelled by Schwäbe.

The game burst into life shortly afterwards with El Mala rattling the crossbar with a powerful strike from the edge of the area in the 54th minute.

The hosts responded with a flurry of attempts, including a goal-bound header from Tomoya Andō that substitute Marius Bülter cleared brilliantly off the line.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 69th minute when Karol Mets headed home from close range after Hauke Wahl had nodded Danel Sinani’s corner back across goal.

Waldschmidt rescues Cologne

As St. Pauli sought to protect their advantage, Wagner played his final cards by introducing Waldschmidt and Felipe Chávez for the final stages.

The move paid dividends when Kamiński was brought down in the box by goalscorer Mets in the 83rd minute. After reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, referee Matthias Jöllenbeck pointed to the spot. Waldschmidt stepped up and calmly sent Nikola Vasilj the wrong way to level the scores with just four minutes of normal time remaining.

Both sides pushed for a winner during the eight minutes of added time, but the match ended all square, leaving St. Pauli still occupying the relegation play-off spot and Cologne five points clear of danger with four games left to play.

Player of the Match: Marvin Schwäbe

Schwäbe was instrumental in securing a vital point for his side, making several crucial interventions throughout the 90 minutes.

The Cologne stopper produced excellent saves to deny Hountondji twice and Ritzka in the first half, keeping his team in the contest during periods when St. Pauli were dominating.

His quick reactions and positioning consistently thwarted the hosts’ attempts to extend their lead after Mets’ opener, allowing Köln to stay within touching distance and eventually find an equaliser.

The 29-year-old’s commanding presence in the penalty area and assured handling under pressure earned him the Man of the Match award with 53% of the votes, reflecting his significant contribution to Cologne’s valuable draw.
