According to reports, the DEA has opened several investigations against Petro, including his possible dealings with Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel and his conspiracy to take advantage of his “total peace” scheme to benefit major traffickers who contributed to his presidential campaign. A spokesman for the Colombian presidential office declined to comment on the ongoing investigation or subsequent legal proceedings against Petro.
DEA records, including interviews with confidential informants, point to Petro’s possible involvement with criminal groups that have dominated the South American drug trade for years.
In addition to the Sinaloa Cartel, Petro is also reportedly linked to the Cartel de los Soles, or Cartel of the Sons, a term used to describe a loose network of corrupt, high-ranking military officers in neighboring Venezuela.
However, the report also said it was unclear whether federal prosecutors had implicated Petro in any crime.
