New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday to discuss the escalating tensions in West Asia and the wider security situation in the region.

‘Expressed deep concern’

Taking to X, the PM said the conversation focused on the ongoing crisis and its impact on civilians and regional stability. He also reiterated India’s position that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Had a conversation with Iranian President, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, to discuss the serious situation in the region. Expressed deep concern over the escalation of tensions and the loss of civilian lives as well as damage to civilian infrastructure,” PM Modi wrote on X.

‘Safety and security of Indians’

He also talked about India’s concerns regarding the safety of its citizens in the region and the uninterrupted movement of goods and energy supplies, which are critical for the country’s economy.

“The safety and security of Indian nationals, along with the need for unhindered transit of goods and energy, remain India’s top priorities. Reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability and urged for dialogue and diplomacy,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, the Prime Minister said India would take steps to safeguard its energy security amid the global fuel crisis triggered by the US-Israel war on Iran. Speaking at the NXT Summit 2026 in Delhi, Modi said his government had taken a comprehensive approach to strengthen India’s energy sector and reduce vulnerability to global disruptions.

“Before 2014, India had negligible storage capacity for strategic petroleum reserve; now, we have significant reserves,” PM Modi said. He added that the government would ensure that citizens do not face shortages of fuel and energy despite the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has raised fears of disruptions to global oil supply routes and shipping lanes.
