Communal clash in Nepal’s Sunsari, one dead; Movement on Indian border closed till further orders
Kathmandu. Tension has spread after communal clashes in Nepal’s Sunsari district adjacent to the India-Nepal border. One youth died in the violence, while more than a dozen people, including security personnel, were injured. In view of the situation, the district administration has imposed indefinite prohibition in the affected areas. According to the district administration, the restrictive order will remain in effect from 7 am on Monday till further orders in five major market areas of Sunsari district of Kosi province. During this period, there has been a complete ban on gathering of four or more people, processions, dharnas, demonstrations and public meetings.
Controversy started over loudspeaker and religious flag
According to the police, two different religious communities were organizing their respective programs in Kaptanganj area of Devganj Gram Panchayat on Sunday night. Meanwhile, a dispute started between the two parties regarding the use of loudspeakers and installation of religious flags, which soon turned into a violent clash. When the situation worsened, security forces reached the spot and tried to control the situation. During this firing, 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta died.
Many people including security personnel injured
According to police, more than 12 people, including security personnel, have been injured in the clash. The injured are undergoing treatment in local hospitals. The administration has deployed additional security forces in the area and the situation is being constantly monitored.
Action will be taken on breaking the prohibition order
The district administration has clarified that legal action will be taken against those violating the prohibitory orders. Breaking the rules can result in a fine of up to 500 Nepali rupees, up to one month in jail, or both.
Important area for India-Nepal border
Sunsari District is located in south-eastern Nepal and borders the Indian state of Bihar. This area is included in the major routes of trade and transportation between the two countries. The administration has appealed to the people to maintain peace and not pay attention to rumours.
