Complaint filed against Hardik Pandya over alleged flag disrespect

A Pune-based lawyer has filed a complaint seeking legal action against Hardik Pandya for allegedly disrespecting the Indian national flag during the celebrations that followed India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The complainant has urged police to register a First Information Report (FIR) and investigate the alleged incident.

The complaint has triggered debate on social media and among cricket fans regarding the conduct of players during victory celebrations.

Complaint lodged at police station

The complaint was filed by Wajid Khan at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station. According to the lawyer, the alleged act occurred during post-match celebrations after India defeated New Zealand national cricket team in the final match.

Khan alleged that Pandya had wrapped the Indian tricolour around himself while celebrating on the field with Mahieka Sharma.

He claimed that the act amounted to disrespect towards the national flag and requested the police to take legal action.

Allegations regarding national flag

Speaking to media agencies, the lawyer said the incident violated provisions related to maintaining the dignity of the national flag.

According to Khan, Pandya was seen dancing during the celebrations with the tricolour tied to his back.

He further alleged that during the celebrations the cricketer was lying down with his girlfriend while the national flag was wrapped around his body.

Khan argued that such actions undermine the dignity associated with the national flag and therefore require legal scrutiny.

Legal provisions cited

The complaint refers to provisions under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act 1971which deals with acts considered disrespectful to national symbols including the national flag.

The lawyer stated that under the law citizens are expected to treat the national flag with dignity and respect.

He also said that although the incident occurred in another city, he believed the complaint could still be submitted locally because the national flag represents the entire country.

Police officials accepted the complaint and provided the complainant with an acknowledgement copy.

Celebrations after India’s victory

The controversy emerged after India secured a dramatic victory over New Zealand in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026which was played at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

The win triggered emotional celebrations among players, staff and fans across the country.

During the post-match festivities, several videos circulated on social media showing Pandya celebrating with Sharma on the field along with other members of the Indian team.

In the clips, the couple could be seen dancing, posing with the trophy and sharing emotional moments while the team continued celebrating the historic victory.

Viral video sparks mixed reactions

One of the videos that gained widespread attention showed the couple lying together on a podium structure during the victory ceremony while celebrations continued around them.

The footage quickly went viral online, drawing mixed reactions from viewers.

While many fans described the moment as a harmless expression of joy after a long and demanding tournament, others argued that celebrations on the victory stage should maintain a certain level of formality.

Some social media users also questioned whether the tricolour was used appropriately during the celebration.

Police yet to take further action

As of now, police officials have only acknowledged receiving the complaint and have not confirmed whether a formal FIR will be registered.

Authorities are expected to examine the complaint and determine whether the allegations fall within the scope of the relevant legal provisions.

Legal experts note that such complaints often require detailed verification of video evidence and circumstances before further action is initiated.

Conclusion

The complaint against Hardik Pandya has added a legal dimension to the celebrations following India’s T20 World Cup victory. While many supporters view the moment as an emotional celebration, others have raised questions about the use of national symbols during such events.

Police will now decide whether the matter warrants further investigation under laws governing respect for the national flag.
