Did you know the legend of Sankasura before Prajakta read the script of this serial? When asked, she said, “I had never heard of Shankasura before and was not aware of this ritual either. I am not from Konkan and have no relatives there, so the concept was completely new to me. However, the first time I heard about Shankasura, I was reminded of a very similar tradition from my mother’s village – Bhalvani (near Pandharpur).”

The actress added, “Instead of a palanquin, our village has a custom of ‘Kavad’. People from two different castes dance with two Kavadis on their shoulders, walk around the village with devotion and then they are taken to Shani Shingnapur, where there is a big festival. It is a tradition dedicated to two very close friends, who have vowed to be together for life. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, and so when I heard Shankasura’s story, it immediately resonated with me”.

Talking about what she learned while reading the script, she said, “I loved how Shankasura encapsulated the essence of Maharashtra so beautifully. On the one hand, Maharashtra is very religious – believing in faith, devotion, rituals and traditions. But at the same time, it is equally practical, rational and does not accept blind faith easily. These two opposite ideologies coexist very strongly in our culture and Shankasura plays out the dichotomy very effectively. As a viewer, I was constantly wondering what was wrong, and what I remember most about it was the ending, which was very logical and touching.

Inspired by the little-heard folktales of Konkan, Deokhel is an intense psychological thriller. which blends tradition, superstition and crime against the terrifying backdrop of the Shimga (Holi) festival.
