Congress announces candidates for MP and Assam by-polls ahead of November 13 voting

New Delhi: Preparations have begun for the by-elections to be held for five assembly seats in Assam, with voting scheduled for November 13. Meanwhile, Congress has announced its candidates for four of these seats. The party has fielded candidates in Dholai, Sidli, Bongaigaon and Samguri, and has also revealed candidates for two seats in Madhya Pradesh.

Congress has nominated Dhruv Jyoti Purkayastha for the Dholai seat, Sanjeev Warle for Sidli, Brajenjit Sinha for Bongaigaon, and Tanjil Hussain for Samguri. The party has yet to announce a candidate for the Behali seat. This information was shared by Congress in a post on its social media, stating that party president Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the nominations for the by-elections in Assam and Madhya Pradesh.

Congress and BJP gear up for competitive battles in MP

For the Madhya Pradesh by-elections, Congress has nominated Mukesh Malhotra for the Vijaypur seat and Rajkumar Patel for the Budhni assembly seat. The BJP has fielded Ramnivas Rawat from Vijaypur and Ramakant Bhargava from Budhni. A close contest is expected in both races.

In Assam, Chief Election Officer Anurag Goyal announced that a total of 910,665 voters are eligible to cast their ballots across these five assembly constituencies, comprising 455,924 men and 454,722 women. Voting will take place at 1,078 polling stations, with results set to be declared on November 23. These five seats became vacant after the MLAs were elected as MPs, prompting the need for by-elections.

By-polls loom in Madhya Pradesh

In Madhya Pradesh, Budhni Vidhan Sabha has traditionally been a stronghold for Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. After he was elected from the Vidisha Lok Sabha seat, he resigned from Budhni, leading to the vacancy. Additionally, Ramniwas Rawat from the Vijaypur Lok Sabha seat left Congress to join the BJP, which also resulted in the need for by-elections on these two seats.
