Congress attacks the government over increasing cancer cases in Delhi, demands improvement in health system.

The rapidly increasing cases of cancer in Delhi have deepened the concern of the people. Responding to the latest data of ICMR-National Cancer Registry Programme, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Devendra Yadav launched a scathing attack on the government. He said that the condition of the capital is becoming increasingly dire, but the governments are turning a blind eye and no concrete steps are being taken to improve the situation.

Devendra Yadav said that the number of cancer patients in the capital is continuously increasing and the latest figures are very worrying. 28,387 new cases were registered in 2024, 27,561 in 2023 and 26,735 in 2022. According to him, as soon as the patient hears the word ‘cancer’, he begins to understand the end of his life, but the governments have so far failed to provide modern treatment and better facilities. He not only targeted the previous Aam Aadmi Party government but also the current BJP ruled Rekha Gupta government over the poor condition of the health infrastructure.

The Congress leader said that more than 15.33 lakh cancer cases being reported across the country by 2024 presents a horrifying picture of this “silent epidemic”. He says that compared to population density, the cancer rate in Delhi is the highest in the entire country. Quoting cancer experts, he said that Delhi’s poisonous air, stress, dust particles and increasing pollution are the main factors of this disease. Also, due to late detection, the number of cases is continuously increasing every year.

Risk of cancer increasing due to pollution and lifestyle

Devendra Yadav expressed serious concern about the increasing risk of lung cancer. He said that when the air of the capital is poisonous, it becomes difficult to control the spread of the disease. Yadav demanded from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta that a large-scale cancer awareness campaign should be conducted in Delhi and screening and modern treatment facilities should be expanded in government hospitals, so that economically weaker patients can get relief.

Yadav said that consumption of adulterated foods, tobacco and alcohol are among the major causes of cancer. He sarcastically alleged that the government earns crores of rupees of revenue by allowing the sale of these products, but fails to provide free medicines and timely screening facilities to the patients. According to Yadav, due to the poor condition of government hospitals, it is becoming very difficult for poor patients to get treatment.

Future of cancer in Delhi, serious warning

The Congress leader alleged that due to the negligence of the government, even fake medicines for serious diseases like cancer are being sold openly in Delhi, due to which patients are forced to lose their lives instead of getting treatment. He described it as the “biggest misfortune” for the capital. Yadav said the figures are shocking as one in every 6 men and one in every 7 women in the age group of 0-74 years in Delhi are likely to develop cancer in their lifetime. The average age of cancer diagnosis in men is 58 years and in women is 55 years, which presents a worrying picture of the deteriorating air quality and environmental conditions of the capital.

Yadav also directly held the Rekha Gupta government responsible for Delhi’s air quality index continuing to remain at a dangerous level of 400+. He said that increasing pollution, dilapidated health infrastructure and government apathy are together pushing the capital into the quagmire of diseases.
