Congress demands 45 seats, DMK ready to give only 25

Seat sharing talks continue between Congress and DMK in Tamil Nadu

New Delhi. Ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, discussions are going on over seat sharing between the Congress and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu. Congress has demanded 45 seats, while DMK is ready to give only 25 seats. Elections in this state are expected to be held in April-May this year.

meeting on seat sharing

Congress Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal and other prominent leaders recently held a meeting with Chief Minister MK Stalin, in which the number of seats was discussed, but at present no agreement has been reached. Congress says that this demand is based on the review of the 2021 election results. In the last election, DMK contested 173 out of 234 seats and won 133 seats while losing 40 seats.

Congress’s arguments

Congress believes that if they are given more seats, they can win about 20 seats which they lost last time due to their strong local presence and better unity in direct contests. According to party sources, the main objective of the demand for 45 seats is to improve vote prospects and strengthen the alliance, thereby ensuring a more balanced seat distribution in 2026.

discussions continue

Chief Minister MK Stalin and Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal attended a meeting held in Chennai on Sunday, in which senior leaders of both the parties were also present. Earlier, Kader Mohideen of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) had met DMK leaders. Thus, before the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, talks are going on between Congress and DMK regarding seat sharing, but at present no conclusion has been reached.
