Congress starting to come out of ‘pending mode’? signals coming from southern states

In the last decade and a half, the Congress Party has been criticized a lot for the delay in taking decisions. Also had to suffer the loss of being stranded in states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Even now in many states of Uttar Pradesh its situation seems to be stuck but in the southern states it seems to be coming out of this ‘pending mode’. After Tamil Nadu and Kerala, now Congress in Karnataka too has probably decided to take a ‘big decision’. If the indications are as per the decisions taken after the meeting held in Delhi on Tuesday, then the Congress will see a change in an instant.

There is talk that Congress is now going to remove Siddaramaiah from the post of Chief Minister in Karnataka. In this situation, DK Shivakumar can be given the post of Chief Minister and Siddaramaiah’s son Yatindra can be given the post of Cabinet Minister. Another discussion is that by sending Siddaramaiah to Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge should be made the Chief Minister of Karnataka for the time being. After this, KC Venugopal can also be made the national president of Congress. If all these speculations prove to be true then Karnataka will change in an instant. In Karnataka, there will not only be change at the government and organizational level, there will also be change within the Parliament and in the national leadership.

Congress in action mode in the south

Congress has started taking fast decisions from the southern states. In the recently held Tamil Nadu elections, Congress was with its old partner Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). As soon as the election results came, Congress saw that the time had come for Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), without any delay it not only supported Joseph Vijay but also broke the alliance with DMK. Congress has announced to go with TVK in all the upcoming elections. Through this she is giving the message that now she is walking on a new path and taking decisions according to the future circumstances.

More or less a similar situation was seen in Kerala also. In Kerala, KC Venugopal was said to be the choice of many MLAs and also the Congress leadership. However, keeping in mind the popularity at the local level and many other reasons, Congress made V.D. Satheesan the Chief Minister. In this way Congress stopped a rebellion for the time being. On the other hand, Ramesh Chennithala was also pacified by making him the Home Minister. Now it is KC Venugopal’s turn. If he is made the National President of Congress, then the problem of his not being able to become CM can also be removed and in this way Congress will also be successful in satisfying all its soldiers.

Will there be change in Karnataka?

There has been a discussion for a long time about changing the Chief Minister in Karnataka. However, now it seems that after Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Congress leadership has also decided on Karnataka. It is being said that Siddaramaiah has been prepared for this and it can be formally announced on Thursday. If this happens, Siddaramaiah can be given big responsibility at the Centre. The most talked about thing is that the roles of Siddaramaiah and Mallikarjun Kharge should be interchanged. That means Mallikarjun Kharge should return to Karnataka and Siddaramaiah should go to Rajya Sabha and replace Kharge.

If this happens then Congress can put forward its ‘OBC agenda’ more strongly. Also, by making Mallikarjun Kharge the Chief Minister, she will be saved from attacks on snatching away the post of the OBC leader. Mallikarjun Jhadge comes from Dalit community and by making him CM, Congress can strengthen the Dalit card in many states. Earlier, she had also tried to make herself a supporter of Dalits by supporting Joseph Vijay. If it is able to present the Dalit card more strongly, then it can get a basis to strengthen itself in states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

Pending mode still continues in North India

Even though the Congress Party seems to be taking decisions fast in the southern states, its pace still seems to be slow in North India. There are elections in Uttar Pradesh next year but Congress does not seem to have any clear strategy. Neither her own organization looks strong right now nor does she look sure about her alliance partner. Sometimes she is seen going with the Samajwadi Party and sometimes there are reports of her closeness to the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Congress is completely cold after the election defeat in Bihar. Now Congress may have an easier time in West Bengal but the election defeat has not even been reviewed and the organization is lying in a dull state. Similarly, in Punjab too, Congress is not showing the same promptness as other parties are showing.
