The growing strength of victory! Congress will leave 22 years of partnership and support TVK
A big development has come to light in the politics of Tamil Nadu. Indian National Congress has decided to support Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam on Tuesday. According to sources associated with the party, this decision has been taken keeping in mind the “protection of the Constitution” and secular values. Meanwhile, the newly elected MLAs of TVK in Chennai have elected party founder and actor C. Joseph Vijay as the leader of the legislature party.
This decision of Congress may intensify the stir in the opposition alliance INDIA Block in Tamil Nadu and may also bring tension in Congress’s 22-year-old partnership with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
What do the election figures say?
TVK has won 108 seats in the 234-member assembly and needs 10 more seats for majority. Congress has got 5 seats and with its support TVK’s figure will reach 113. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has also indicated that it will provide “constructive and critical support” to the new government. It has 2 seats, taking the total to 115. Apart from this, Communist Party of India and Indian Union Muslim League, which have 2 seats each, are also likely to support. With this, TVK can easily cross the majority mark.
Will there be an alliance with AIADMK?
Although discussions of alliance between TVK and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam are also going on, but its possibility is considered less. The reason for this is that AIADMK had fought the elections in alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party and Vijay has clearly put forward his party’s Dravidian identity and opposition to BJP.
According to sources in Chennai, TVK can also form a minority government if necessary, because both AIADMK and DMK would not want to take the risk of toppling it. By doing this, re-elections can be held and a bigger wave of support for Vijay can be seen.
What is Vijay’s plan before swearing in?
TVK leaders said that Vijay can meet Rajendra Arlekar, who is holding the additional charge of the Governor of Tamil Nadu, at Lok Bhavan on Wednesday. After this the party will take a decision regarding swearing in and cabinet formation. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on May 7. Earlier, Vijay had held a meeting with the MLAs for more than three hours at his office in Pannaiyur, about 45 km from Chennai.
Did Vijay seek support from Congress?
According to HT report, a senior leader said that Vijay has sought support from Congress. Tamil Nadu’s mandate is to have a secular government and protect the Constitution. Under no circumstances will we allow BJP or any of its allies to form the government. Vijay has said that he gets inspiration from Kamaraj. “The Congress President has directed the State Congress Committee to take a final decision keeping in mind the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu.”
Whereas Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary MA Baby said that his party believes that it is important to maintain some political morality. “Our stance, based on further discussions, is to extend constructive and critical support to the new government so as to keep communal forces at bay. We want the protection of the deprived sections and will decide our stand on an issue-by-issue basis,” he said.
