New Delhi: Ever since the Modi government at the Center changed the name of the MNREGA scheme, various opposition parties, including the Congress, have been on the offensive. The Center is now preparing to launch a nationwide agitation on the issue of the name change of MNREGA. The Congress is set to launch a nationwide “Save MNREGA” movement from January 5, 2026, and this has been officially announced.

Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge made this announcement. A meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) was held on Saturday at the new Congress headquarters, Indira Bhavan, on Kotla Marg in Delhi. After the meeting, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge gave important information.

Mallikarjun Kharge made a significant statement

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party has unanimously decided that any attempt to weaken MNREGA will be opposed with full force. In the CWC meeting, leaders pledged to fight for the protection of this law, from the streets to Parliament.

He said that MNREGA is not just a scheme, but a constitutional right to work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this scheme provided employment and livelihood to millions of people. If MNREGA had not existed, millions of lives could have been lost.

He added that this scheme is the result of the foresight of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, and its effectiveness has been acknowledged by several agencies, including the CAG, in Parliament.
