Hazaribagh: A horrific road accident that took place on Saturday near the valley on the National Highway under Charhi police station area of the district shocked the area. The vehicle of the forest department team that had set out to drive the elephants away from the population was hit hard by a speeding uncontrolled container. Two people died on the spot in the accident, while several others were seriously injured. Mandu resident Shahadat Ansari has been identified among the deceased, while the identity of the other deceased could not be established till late evening.

The injured include Mantu Mahato, Rajiv Marandi, Ravindra Marandi, Dilip Murmu, Sanjay Karmakar, Shambhu Karmakar and Shibnom Marandi. Seriously injured Sanjay Karmakar has been referred to Ranchi for better treatment. According to the information, in view of the increasing menace of elephants in the area, the Forest Department had called a specially trained team from Bankura, West Bengal. The team had been running a campaign for the past several days to return the elephants safely to the forest.

During the operation on Saturday, the container going from Hazaribagh towards Ramgarh lost control near the valley, entered the other lane and collided with the forest department vehicle. The collision was so severe that the vehicle was blown to pieces. About ten members of the vehicle got hit by it. Forester in-charge Shailendra Kumar was also present in the vehicle, who has been kept under medical observation. As soon as information about the incident was received, Charhi police station and ambulance reached the spot. Traffic was restored after removing the damaged vehicles. Police have seized the container and started investigation.
