Many buffaloes died in the collision between a truck and a container full of buffaloes on Ramvan Path Gaman Highway in Satna. The driver absconded after the accident. Police suspect illegal animal transportation and investigation is ongoing.
Madhya Pradesh: A horrific road accident on Tuesday morning shocked everyone near Tighra turn under City Kotwali police station area of Satna city. There was a head-on collision between a container full of buffaloes and a truck laden with grains coming from the front on the Ramvan Path Gaman Highway.
The accident occurred at around 4 in the morning, when there was relatively less traffic on the road. The collision was so strong that both the vehicles went down the highway and overturned. Container number MP 20 JJ 1308 and truck number MP 21 ZD 9367 were completely damaged.
Buffaloes were stuffed into containers
After the collision, the buffaloes loaded in the container got badly trapped. According to eyewitnesses, more than 50 buffaloes were packed in the container in very cramped conditions. After the accident, many buffaloes died on the spot, while many were seriously injured.
There was an atmosphere of chaos for some time as injured and dead animals were scattered along the highway. Hearing the pitiful screams of the animals, nearby people reached the spot.
Police took charge
As soon as information about the incident was received, local people and passers-by informed the City Kotwali police. The police team immediately reached the spot and with the help of people, got the injured buffaloes out of the container.
The condition of some buffaloes is said to be critical. Police controlled the traffic on the highway and normalized the situation. Due to the accident, traffic on the road was disrupted for some time.
Driver absconding after the accident
After the accident, the driver of the container fled from the spot. Due to the driver’s escape, the police suspect that the matter is not related to a normal accident. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the buffaloes were being taken from Satna to Jabalpur.
The way the animals were packed in containers beyond capacity and inhumanely, there is a suspicion of animal trafficking. Police say that this could be a case of illegal animal transportation.
Search for the owner continues
Police are now trying to identify the owner of the container and the absconding driver. Also, investigation of documents related to transportation of animals has been started, so that it can be clear whether the transportation of animals was legal or not.
City Kotwali police say that the entire matter is being investigated seriously. As soon as the driver and vehicle owner come forward, action will be taken under animal cruelty and other sections.
