Contaminated water caused havoc in Indore, now NHRC issues notice to Chief Secretary
Indore water issue: There is a stir in the city due to the increasing health crisis in Bhagirathpura area of Indore. According to the report, bacterial infection has been found in one-third of the water samples taken from here. Investigations by the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College confirmed that contaminated bacteria were found in the water, which were causing serious health problems. Officials said that due to leakage in the main supply pipeline, this water became contaminated and spread rapidly in the area. Now NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of the state in this matter.
NHRC notice and administrative responsibility
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also intervened in this matter and issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh. According to media reports, people were complaining about contaminated water for several days, but the authorities did not take any action. The NHRC found that the main pipeline passed beneath a public toilet, and due to leakage, dirty sewage water had mixed with drinking water. Additionally, water was reaching homes due to breaks in many supply lines.
Spread of disease and series of deaths
The number of people falling ill from contaminated water is continuously increasing. Nearly 2,800 people have fallen ill over the past ten days and 272 have had to be hospitalized. The official death toll is put at four, but according to local reports, 14 people have died. These deaths have raised questions over the functioning of the administration and created deep anger among local residents.
Coordination between health department and municipal corporation
Indore Divisional Commissioner Sudam Khade has also expressed serious concern in this matter. He said that more than 48,400 people have been tested, out of which 2,800 were found to have symptoms of the disease. Currently 201 patients are hospitalized, of which 32 are in ICU. The need for better coordination between the Health Department and the Municipal Corporation regarding this matter has been accepted, so that such situations can be avoided in future.
