Continuous humiliation led to R Ashwin’s retirement: Legendary off-spinner father drops bombshell

Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement has shocked former and current players. The fans are not ready to accept that the veteran spinner walked off without any reason. Ashwin came along with captain Rohit Sharma for the press conference after the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane.

He didn’t take a lot of time and revealed that this was his last day in international cricket and that he would take no further part in the series. He refused to take any questions and thanked the BCCI and the teammates for their support. However, there is a lot behind Ashwin’s decision if his father is to be believed.

Ravichandran claimed that his son’s continuous humiliation could be behind the shocking decision. He mentioned that the family was aware of the decision.

“I came to know at the last minute and I don’t know what was going through his mind. He just announced and I had no choice but to accept it. One part was happy and the other was unhappy. I feel he should have continued,” he told CNN News18.

“It’s his decision and I can’t interfere. There could be many reasons and he only knows. It could be due to humiliation,” he added.

Ashwin hasn’t played regularly in SENA countries. Since 2021, he has taken part in six Tests in England, South Africa, and Australia.

The team management led by Gautam Gambhir included Washington Sundar in the Playing XI in the first Test in Perth. Although he played in the second game in Adelaide, there was no place for him in the Gabba Test.

“We were expecting it as humiliation was going on. He was emotional for family as he was on the field for 14-15 years. How long he could tolerate humiliation? The decision was taken by him,” he added.
