CONSTITUENCY FIRST

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram recently hosted a house-warming at his MP flat in Delhi. On the menu was some delicious Chettinad food with the MP himself playing a gracious host. However, what struck the guests even more than the hospitality was the nameplate of the house, which simply stated Sivaganga, and not the MP’s name. Sivaganga is his constituency and as Karti said, this is the reason why he is here, thanks to the people of Sivaganga. So they should all feel they have a home in Delhi. That’s certainly a message that will strike home, all the way back in his constituency.

POLITICS GETS POETIC

Last week, the Rajya Sabha bid farewell to 59 MPs whose term has come to an end, and not everyone will be seeking re-election. When it came to former Prime Minister Deve Gowda’s turn, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge could not resist taking a dig at the one-time ally from Karnataka, though it was done in a genial and poetic spirit that did not offend. Kharge told Deve Gowda recently that: “your love with us, marriage with Modi-ji (while you may have fallen in love with us but your wedding was with Modi-ji).” Perhaps Kharge should also remember that the one reason why Gowda had to resign his Prime Ministership much before his term had ended, was because the Congress had pulled the rug from underneath his government. Touché.

BRITTAS SPEECH GOES VIRAL

CPM Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas’ speech in the House during the farewell to outgoing members has gone viral on social media, for he had a word to say about each person. To Digvijaya Singh he said he was the only Congressman who called him comrade and added that he was the only Congress leader who respected the comrades and considered the Left a vital part of the political spectrum. Interestingly, Digvijaya’s left leaning politics had seen many a run-in with some of the Congress ministers when the UPA was in power. However, another left leaning Congressman came in for some sharp criticism by Brittas for he went on to add that Jairam (Ramesh) never called him or any of the Left MPs comrade though it was with their (CPM’s) support that Jairam had become a minister. Brittas added, “I know that you will never reciprocate our sentiments.” But his most viral take was on Priyanka Chaturvedi whose term is also coming to a close, for as Brittas pointed out, many Page 3 photographers will miss her as her Parliament pictures were a regular in the daily newspapers. To which Priyanka pointed out that this is just a pause, that she will be back. On that note!
