Cooper Connolly dominated in the debut match… led the team to victory by hitting 5 sixes.

Tezzbuzz Desk- While the new players have got limited opportunities in the initial matches of IPL 2026 and most of the debutants have failed to leave their mark, Punjab Kings’ young all-rounder Cooper Connolly has caught everyone’s attention by performing brilliantly in his very first match. In this match played against Gujarat Titans, Connolly played a match-winning innings and led the team to a memorable victory.

In this match played in Mullanpur, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer surprised everyone by including Cooper Connolly in the playing eleven. Looking at his recent form, questions were being raised on his selection as his performance in the last few T20 matches was not special. But this young player seized the opportunity and answered all the criticism with the bat.

Punjab, bowling first, restricted Gujarat Titans to 162 runs. Although Connolly did not get a chance to bowl, the real test was in batting. While chasing the target, Punjab had a bad start and wickets started falling quickly. In such a situation, Connolly, who came to bat at number three, showed an excellent balance of restraint and aggression.

Connolly batted fearlessly even in front of experienced bowlers like Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan. At a time when the team was in trouble and wickets were falling continuously, he took charge of the innings and maintained the run pace. He completed his half-century in just 34 balls and remained unbeaten till the end, scoring 72 runs in 44 balls. In this innings he hit 5 fours and 5 sixes.

Thanks to this brilliant innings of Connolly, Punjab Kings achieved the target in 19.1 overs and made a strong start to the season. With this performance he proved that the trust reposed in him was justified.

It is noteworthy that in the IPL auction, Punjab Kings had bought Cooper Connolly for Rs 3 crore, on which there was some criticism. Even coach Ricky Ponting was accused of giving priority to Australian players. But in his very first match, Connolly gave a befitting answer to all these questions.

Before coming to the IPL, Connolly had also performed brilliantly in the Big Bash League, where he scored 229 runs and played an important role in helping Perth Scorchers win the title by taking 15 wickets.

Overall, this debut of Cooper Connolly is not only important for his career, but has also become one of the most memorable moments of IPL 2026.
