Corbin Bosch registers this unique record in the debut match against Pakistan
Allrounder Corbin Bosch debuted for South Africa on Thursday 26th December in Tests and, in Day 1 play of the current Boxing Day Test series against Pakistan at SuperSport Park in Centurion, he could strike 4 wickets for 63 runs in the quota of 15 overs. He opened his wicket account by taking Pakistan captain Shan Masood (17) on the very first ball of his Test career, then also clean-bowled Saud Shakeel (14), Aamer Jamal (28) and Naseem Shah (0).
After the hosts bowled out Pakistan for a total of 211 runs in its first innings, Bosch further showed his ability with the willow. The No. 9 batsman from the Bavuma-led team walked out to bat and scored 81 runs (not out) in 93 balls with the help of 15 fours.
The right-handed batter from Durban broke the 72 runs from 135 balls record of Sri Lanka’s Milan Rathnayake, who made his Test debut for Sri Lanka against England in Manchester on August 21, 2024.
Among the batsmen with the most runs on Test debut as No.9 batter, Balwinder Singh Sandhu is third. Sandhu made his Test debut for India against Pakistan in Hyderabad (Sind) on 14 January 1983 and scored 71 runs with the bat coming out to No.9 for the Sunil Gavaskar-led side
Bosch contributed 41 runs for the ninth wicket with Kagiso Rabada (13) and 47 runs for the last wicket with Dane Paterson (12) during his stay at the crease on Friday. In fact, it was Bosch who helped South Africa to turn things around from a precarious situation of 213/8 to a substantial first innings score of 301, thereby forging a lead of 90 runs.
Almost guaranteed a place in the WTC 2025 final if they manage to get the better of Pakistan in the continued match, South Africa currently sits at No. 1 in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table.
