Corning investigated by EU antitrust regulators over exclusive deals with phone makers

Delhi Delhi. EU antitrust regulators on Wednesday sued the U.S. Glass maker Corning launched an investigation into exclusive supply deals with mobile phone makers and raw glass processing companies over concerns it could lock rival glass producers out of large swathes of the market. The European Commission said it Will assess whether Corning has abused its dominant position in the global market for glass used primarily in mobile phones.

EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement, “We are investigating whether Corning, which is a major producer of this particular glass, tried to drive out rival glass producers, thereby providing consumers with cheaper and Regulators said the EU investigation will focus on exclusive sourcing obligations, exclusivity exemptions and clauses requiring phone makers to inform Corning about competitive offers and to respond to these offers. Only need to accept if Corning doesn't match the price.

The investigation will also examine Corning's deals with companies that process raw glass, including exclusive purchase obligations and no challenge clauses. The EU's competition regulator said Corning, which makes mobile phones under the Gorilla Glass brand , which sells break-resistant glass used as covers for tablets and smartwatches, may now make concessions to address its concerns. Companies could risk fines of up to 10% of their global turnover if they breach EU anti-trust rules.
