Will Greenland become America’s 51st state? New bill introduced in US Parliament
New Delhi: In America, once again the demand to include Greenland in the American territory has intensified. Rep. Randy Fine, a Republican from Florida, introduced a bill in the House on Monday, which aims to pave the way for Greenland to become the 51st US state. This step has been taken at a time when President Donald Trump is publicly expressing his desire to bring this autonomous region of Denmark under American rule.

Main objective and security reasons of the bill
The bill, introduced by Congressman Randy Fine, proposes to authorize President Trump to “take necessary steps” to acquire Greenland. In his statement, Fine described Greenland as an essential asset for national security.
According to him, “Greenland is not just a remote outpost that can be ignored. Those who control Greenland also control key Arctic shipping lanes and security infrastructure. America cannot leave the future in the hands of a regime that seeks to undermine our values and security.”

Greenland is currently a semiautonomous territory of Denmark and a major NATO ally. In view of the possibility of tension in relations between America and Denmark amid this stance of the Trump administration, a bipartisan delegation of American lawmakers is going to Copenhagen this week.
The main objective of this delegation is to demonstrate unity between the two countries and maintain diplomatic dialogue, so that mutual trust does not diminish amid the growing political statements regarding Greenland.
strategic importance of greenland
New maritime trade routes are opening due to melting ice in the Arctic region. The geographical location of Greenland makes it extremely important to gain control over these routes. Furthermore, the region is estimated to have huge mineral resources and natural gas reserves, over which the US wants to strengthen its hold.
However, the local governments of Denmark and Greenland have already made it clear that “Greenland is not for sale.” The introduction of this new bill is expected to further intensify the diplomatic debate at the international level.

Making a foreign territory a US state is a complex legal and diplomatic process. For this, not only the approval of the US Parliament will be required, but Denmark’s consent and adherence to international laws will also be mandatory. The bill is currently in its early stages and will require heavy political support to pass.
