The commission was given a total of 18 months to submit its final recommendations to the government. • 24 July 2026 (Puducherry tour): The Commission has issued official notice for the tour and meeting to be held in Puducherry on 9 September 2026, under which the last date for registration has been fixed as 18 August. With this, the employee organizations there will be able to present their suggestions directly before the Commission.
• 24 July 2026 (Chennai tour): Expanding the scope of discussions in Tamil Nadu, a notice has been issued for the Commission’s visit to Chennai on 7 and 8 September 2026, the last date of which is also 18 August.
• 23 July 2026 (Delhi Meetings): Important meetings with various stakeholders in the capital Delhi have been scheduled on August 7 and August 10, 2026, for which the last date to apply was July 31.
• 29 May 2026 (Memorandum date extended): Its last date was extended to June 15, 2026, giving additional time to employee organizations, pensioners and recognized unions to submit their recommendations and memorandum.
• 29 May 2026 (Kolkata tour): A regional consultation program was organized in Kolkata on 9-10 July 2026 to seek feedback from stakeholders of West Bengal before fully preparing the final report.

What important milestones have been completed so far?

During the last eight months, the 8th Pay Commission has successfully crossed several major and important milestones:

• 16 January 2025: The government had taken its historic decision to constitute the 8th Pay Commission.
• 28 October 2025: The Union Cabinet had approved the ‘Terms of Reference’ i.e. the working conditions for the Commission.
• 3 November 2025: The 8th Pay Commission was formally constituted by the Government of India.
• 7 February 2026: The official website of the Commission, online data portal and stakeholder consultation platform were launched.
• April to July 2026: The round of memorandum submission and regional level consultations continued in many states and union territories of the country.
• By mid-2027: It is expected that by this time the 8th Pay Commission will submit its final recommendations to the Central Government.

Most important things for employees and pensioners

From these latest updates on the official website of the Commission, it becomes completely clear that the 8th Pay Commission is giving top priority to several rounds of discussions on a wide scale before submitting its final report. The Commission is gathering direct feedback from employees and pensioners through these major meetings to be held in Delhi, Chennai and Puducherry in the months of August and September.

The biggest and main issue in all these discussions is that of ‘fitment factor’. Let us tell you that during the Sixth Pay Commission it was fixed at 1.86 and during the Seventh Pay Commission it was fixed at 2.57. Now, after considering the complaints and suggestions of all the parties, the 8th Pay Commission will decide the new fitment factor, which will have a direct impact on the pay revisions in the coming decade i.e. till the 9th Pay Commission. Big employee organizations like BPMS and NC JCM are strongly demanding to increase the fitment factor by more than 3.5 times, although there is no official approval from the government yet.
