In this video, Kamakoti has described cow urine as full of anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and digestive properties. His statement was regarding the role of cow urine in treating various types of diseases like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). In the video, Kamakoti narrated the story of a sadhu who was suffering from high fever and had consumed cow urine, after which his health improved. He had given this statement in the cow protection meeting organized on January 15 on the occasion of Mattu Pongal. According to Kamakoti, consumption of cow urine not only benefits the digestive system, but it also helps in destroying bacteria and fungus.
There were strong reactions
At the same time, he presented it as a natural medicine and emphasized on its potential medicinal benefits. After this statement of Kamakoti, there were sharp reactions on social media. Congress leader Karti P. Chidambaram termed it as 'pseudo-science' and said that such a statement by the director of IIT Madras is inappropriate.
Similarly, other political and social groups also criticized this comment. Rationalist organization Dravida Kazhagam described the comments as “shameful” and alleged that Kamakoti was promoting low agnostic views. Tamil Nadu's DMK party leader TKS Elangovan alleged that the central government is using such narratives to destroy education.

Bioactive properties investigated
However, Kamakoti's supporters are looking at this comment in a broader context. He says that he is an organic farmer and he said this while speaking in a program related to cow protection. According to him, scientific studies also exist to support the medicinal properties of cow urine. A study published in the journal 'Nature' examined the bioactive properties of cow urine.
Kamakoti, who holds the post of Director of IIT Madras from 2022, is a distinguished scientist and also a recipient of the DRDO Academy Excellence Award (2013). His statement was probably intended to make people aware of the importance of preserving cattle breeds. This case has raised a new question on the relationship between science, culture and traditional medicine in society, which is being widely discussed.
