Credit cards: Can one apply for it online? Know the steps involved
Kolkata: The thirst for plastic cards is growing rapidly among Indians. Data reveal that there were as many as 11.1 crore credit cards in circulation in the country in mid-2025. And every month Indians spend more than Rs 1.9-2 lakh crores through these cards only. This data is around mid-2025 and reports indicate the expenditure value has gone up after the GST rejig in early Sept last year.
There are a few things that one should get at hand before beginning the application process. These are basic information such as age, income, credit history are what all credit card issuers will ask for. But one of the things that one should be clear about is why does one need the card for. Different cards offer different reward points which are focused on some activities that the card holder does more. Accordingly, he/she gets benefits which are tuned to those needs. For example, if one visits a petrol station often to get car fuel, it is more appropriate to apply for one type of card. Else, if one wants to eat out more or go to movies or make aircraft ticket bookings one has to apply for different types of credit cards. Let’s now see the process.

The steps involved
Selecting the credit card: The selection should not be random. It should be suited to the applicant’s pattern of expenditure and lifestyle.
Eligibility: These are quantifiable and have to be according to age, range of income and nature of employment.
Complete and submission of form: All details — name, address, phone number, email, date of birth, financial information — that is asked for have to be keyed in. They should not be different from the KYC documents. The picture must be clear. Salary slips and/or income statements have to be uploaded too.
Video call: It is possible that the applicant has to appear for a video call.
Once the bank approves the application, the card is mailed to the address provided. It will come with a booklet that will contain all the detailed instructions to activate the card.
