Cricket fever at Wankhede: Mumbai Police issue traffic advisory for T20 semi-final |Check route plan

Mumbai: As the cricketing world turns its eyes to the high-stakes T20 semi-final clash between India and England this Thursday, the Mumbai Traffic Police have released a comprehensive advisory to prevent a total gridlock in South Mumbai.

With the first ball scheduled for 7:00 PM and gates swinging open at 4:00 PM, authorities are bracing for a massive influx of fans at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

The ‘public transport’ game plan

To avoid the inevitable “bouncer” of Marine Drive traffic, police are strongly urging spectators to ditch their private cars. Instead, fans are encouraged to leverage Mumbai’s robust rail and metro networks.
Churchgate and Marine Lines railway stations remain the primary hubs for stadium access.
Fans can now utilize the newly connected Churchgate Metro Station, Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line), for a seamless commute.

Know your gate

To streamline the flow of thousands of fans, the Mumbai Traffic Police have issued a gate-specific entry guide.
Gates 1, 2, & 7: Best accessed via Churchgate Railway/Metro Station followed by a walk along E Road.
Gates 3 & 4: Spectators should alight at Marine Lines Railway Station and use the foot overbridge (FOB) near the Roopkala Showroom on Maharshi Karve Road.
Gates 5 & 6: Travelers should use Churchgate Station and cross via the foot overbridge located opposite the Income Tax Office on Maharshi Karve Road.

Alert for daily commuters

For those not heading to the match, the evening commute in South Mumbai is expected to be challenging. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Traffic Police warned motorists to:
Plan Ahead: Factor in significant delays during the evening peak hours.
Seek Alternatives: Use alternate routes to bypass the Marine Drive corridor entirely.
Cooperate: Follow the instructions of the extra traffic personnel deployed on the ground to manage the surge.

By following these “fielding” instructions, authorities hope to ensure that the only drama on Thursday happens on the pitch, not on the roads of Mumbai.
